Counter-surveillance

An inertial will stop a telepath. It will not stop a microphone. The firm’s fourteen sweep technicians deal with the ordinary kind of listening, which is now much more common than the other.

Sweeps

A technical sweep examines every room the client gives us access to for devices that record, transmit or report: hidden microphones and cameras, tapped lines, altered telephones, and the connected appliances that have, in the course of an update, acquired an interest in their owners. A residence takes a day; an office floor about the same.

Every sweep ends with an inventory of what in the building can listen, transmit or bill, delivered with the report. Those inventories are the basis of the firm’s Consumer Device Survey, which found in 2023 that more than half of the devices in our clients’ homes and offices had a microphone.

Advice to clients

Do not mention the sweep on the telephone, in email or in the room to be swept. Do not switch off devices beforehand; we need to see what they do when they think they are off. Tell us about any device you have been given as a present in the past year.

Booking a sweep

Sweeps are booked through Secaucus, +1 201 019 0119, and led by Bernadette Grzelak, Director of Counter-Surveillance. Please book from a telephone outside the premises to be swept.
